Assembly preparation

Prepare a small box for glue-up

Walk through the assembly with dry parts first. Use this checklist to make the next action clear while the adhesive is still workable.

For a small plywood tray, a correct cut list is only the start. The bottom, end walls and long walls must come together in the order shown by that plan. A partition that cannot be reached after the walls are fixed needs a different sequence. Rehearsing with no glue reveals those access problems while the parts can still be moved.

Rehearse one complete assembly

  1. Label the parts with removable marks and place them in assembly order. Check that the intended visible faces and grain directions agree with the drawing.
  2. Bring the parts together on a flat surface. Confirm the base seats as intended, dividers fit and all glue faces meet without using clamps to force a dimensional mistake closed.
  3. Place clamps and protective pads before applying adhesive. Check that the clamp arrangement permits the measurements and access you will need.
  4. Practise the full sequence once. Note any part that must be inserted before another closes its path. Split the operation into compatible subassemblies if the plan allows it.

Assembly time is not cure time

The three manufacturer examples below are published at 70°F and 50% relative humidity. They are planning references for these named products, not a timer that certifies your joint. Conditions, materials and the current bottle instructions still matter.

ProductOpen assemblyTotal assembly
Titebond Original4–6 minutes10–15 minutes
Titebond II Premium3–5 minutes10–15 minutes
Titebond III Ultimate8–10 minutes20–25 minutes

Titebond's general FAQ recommends clean, bare bonding faces and distinguishes time in clamps from time before stressing a joint. For most of its wood glues, it gives 30–60 minutes clamped for unstressed joints and recommends avoiding stress for at least 24 hours. Follow the named product's current directions; removing a clamp is not permission to load the piece.

If the rehearsal fails

Return to the part labels and actual measurements. A base that is too large, a blocked insertion path or an unreachable clamp is a planning problem to resolve before applying glue. Record the failed step and change one part of the sequence at a time. This page does not rate a joint for carrying weight, nor does a checked box establish physical strength.
