Gather a sketchbook and covered drawing tools under a sliding lid, then lay the whole kit out for a session.
A sliding lid covers the kit between sessions and comes fully out for access. The box has no latch; carry it inside another bag that keeps the lid from sliding open.
For Someone packing a small drawing session into a larger carrying bag. Default clear opening: 252 mm × 184 mm × 59.7 mm.
Adjust dimensions and stock ↓Measure before you start
- Arrange the closed sketchbook and capped tools in their intended packing order and measure the complete footprint.
- Measure the tallest packed layer and reserve space beside the box for the full lid travel.
Tools and access
- A saw and guide for straight cuts
- A square, measuring rule and caliper
- Clamps and spacer strips for gluing the upper and lower lid rails
- Offcuts matching both body and lid thickness for a sliding-fit trial
Using this organizer
- Pack dry tools and the closed sketchbook below the lid path.
- Slide the lid closed and place the box level inside the carrying bag.
- At the desk, remove the lid fully and check each tool back into its place before closing.
What a useful result needs to do
- The packed kit clears the underside of the lid along its whole travel.
- The lid slides through its guides by hand without forcing.
- The carrying bag keeps the unlatching lid from opening during the intended move.
- The front pull tab stays accessible and the lid meets the rear stop when closed.
If the fit is wrong
- If a tool catches the lid, remove it and reduce the packed height or resize the box.
- If the lid binds, check its actual thickness, guide clearance and finish buildup on a scrap trial before altering the fit.

Item allowance: A closed sketchbook and capped drawing tools lie flat as one packed kit — 240 × 160 mm, plus 10 mm of handling space per axis.
A feasible cutting layout
Numbered cuts span their parent region. Coordinates use the sheet's top-left origin. Trim all four edges of each sheet you use first. Keep unused sheets whole. This layout does not claim the lowest possible material use.
Compare your stock choices
Try this same inventory with offcuts first and standard sheets first. Each result is a feasible estimate; the solver may miss a better layout.

Connections and machining
No grooves or notches are required. Cut the rectangular parts, then follow the connection details.
Put it together
1. Measure and mark
Measure 12 mm main plywood and 6 mm lid plywood. Mark every part and its grain direction; recalculate before cutting if either thickness changes. Measure the complete packed kit and both plywood thicknesses; include clear desk space for lid removal.
Parts: F, B, L, P, R, U, S, T, Q · Start here2. Cut and label the blanks
Follow the rectangular cutting map and label every instance. Machine the separate notches or grooves only after the blanks are cut. Follow the tool manufacturer’s setup and workholding instructions.
Parts: F, B, L, P, R, U, S, T, Q · After measure3. Dry-fit the case
Check the 300 × 220 mm footprint, square corners and centered inset base. Base clearance is 0 mm per edge; confirm the selected adhesive can bridge that gap.
Parts: F, B, L, P, R, U, S, T, Q · After cut4. Assemble the base and walls
Bond the base and wall contact faces, keeping the base underside flush with the wall bottoms. Clamp square and follow the adhesive cure instructions.
Parts: F, B, L, P · After dry-fit5. Set the lower and upper rails
Bond R at z = 59.7 mm. Fit U flush with the side tops using a 6.3 mm spacer above R. Remove spacers and clear glue squeeze-out.
Parts: R, U, L · After glue6. Fit the rear stop
Bond S against the back, between the side rails, with its underside at z = 71.7 mm. Keep the front entry unobstructed.
Parts: S, B · After rails7. Add the lid pull
Bond the 40 × 12 mm pull tab on top of the lid, centered across its width and flush with its front edge. Let the joint cure before using the pull.
Parts: Q, T · After cut8. Slide and check the lid
Insert T from the front. Check 0.15 mm clearance at each side and above and below, free travel to the rear stop, and full forward removal using Q. Keep the lid unglued to its rails.
Parts: T, Q, R, U, S · After stop, pull9. Cure, finish and check the fit
Follow the adhesive cure instructions. Smooth edges, test the intended objects and apply a compatible finish without filling the clearances. Fit four felt pads. Use only for light desktop items; no load rating is provided. Keep the lid track clear and carry the closed box within a bag. No latch or impact protection is included.
