Sliding-lid box

Bring a complete hand-repair kit to the table and check every sharp item back into its own case before closing.

A sliding cover keeps the kit together between uses. The open interior accepts existing needle cases and scissor covers without pretending the plywood box locks or seals them.

For Someone keeping a compact kit for occasional clothing repairs. Default clear opening: 252 mm × 184 mm × 69.7 mm.

Adjust dimensions and stock ↓
Measure before you start
  • Measure scissors with their protective cover on.
  • Lay out the closed needle case, thread and fastener packets together and record the tallest layer.
Tools and access
  • A saw and guide for straight cuts
  • A square, measuring rule and caliper
  • Clamps and spacer strips for gluing the upper and lower lid rails
  • Offcuts matching both body and lid thickness for a sliding-fit trial
Using this organizer
  1. Open the lid on a clear table and take out only the items for the repair.
  2. Return every needle and pin to its own closed case after the job.
  3. Check the packed height, close the lid, and store the kit in an appropriate place.
What a useful result needs to do
  • Covered scissors fit without crossing into the lid track.
  • Every sharp item has its own closed container before the lid moves.
  • The lid can open fully without spilling the packed kit.
  • The front pull tab stays accessible and the lid meets the rear stop when closed.
If the fit is wrong
  • If a tool requires pressure to fit, resize for its protected envelope or keep it elsewhere.
  • If a sharp item is missing, finish the item check before closing or moving the kit.
Ready to make. All 12 parts fit the listed stock.

Item allowance: Closed needle cases, thread and covered scissors form a flat repair kit — 240 × 160 mm, plus 10 mm of handling space per axis.

A feasible cutting layout

Numbered cuts span their parent region. Coordinates use the sheet's top-left origin. Trim all four edges of each sheet you use first. Keep unused sheets whole. This layout does not claim the lowest possible material use.

Compare your stock choices

Try this same inventory with offcuts first and standard sheets first. Each result is a feasible estimate; the solver may miss a better layout.

  1. 1. Measure and mark

Measure 12 mm main plywood and 6 mm lid plywood. Mark every part and its grain direction; recalculate before cutting if either thickness changes. Measure the protected tools and all closed cases as a packed kit, including the lid clearance.

    Parts: F, B, L, P, R, U, S, T, Q · Start here
  2. 2. Cut and label the blanks

Follow the rectangular cutting map and label every instance. Machine the separate notches or grooves only after the blanks are cut. Follow the tool manufacturer’s setup and workholding instructions.

    Parts: F, B, L, P, R, U, S, T, Q · After measure
  3. 3. Dry-fit the case

Check the 300 × 220 mm footprint, square corners and centered inset base. Base clearance is 0 mm per edge; confirm the selected adhesive can bridge that gap.

    Parts: F, B, L, P, R, U, S, T, Q · After cut
  4. 4. Assemble the base and walls

Bond the base and wall contact faces, keeping the base underside flush with the wall bottoms. Clamp square and follow the adhesive cure instructions.

    Parts: F, B, L, P · After dry-fit
  5. 5. Set the lower and upper rails

Bond R at z = 69.7 mm. Fit U flush with the side tops using a 6.3 mm spacer above R. Remove spacers and clear glue squeeze-out.

    Parts: R, U, L · After glue
  6. 6. Fit the rear stop

Bond S against the back, between the side rails, with its underside at z = 81.7 mm. Keep the front entry unobstructed.

    Parts: S, B · After rails
  7. 7. Add the lid pull

Bond the 40 × 12 mm pull tab on top of the lid, centered across its width and flush with its front edge. Let the joint cure before using the pull.

    Parts: Q, T · After cut
  8. 8. Slide and check the lid

Insert T from the front. Check 0.15 mm clearance at each side and above and below, free travel to the rear stop, and full forward removal using Q. Keep the lid unglued to its rails.

    Parts: T, Q, R, U, S · After stop, pull
  9. 9. Cure, finish and check the fit

Follow the adhesive cure instructions. Smooth edges, test the intended objects and apply a compatible finish without filling the clearances. Fit four felt pads. Use only for light desktop items; no load rating is provided. Use separate closed cases for sharp items. The sliding cover has no lock or child-safety rating.

    Parts: F, B, L, P, R, U, S, T, Q · After slide
